Custom Palette Showcase - Frozen Wastes of Altari
Hello realmrunners and welcome to a look at another of my custom Palette builds!
This time I thought I'd look into making one based around arguably one of the strongest keywords in the game so far; Freeze, as, surprisingly, despite all my toying with the cards from The Last Snow Dragons of Altari, I've never actually built a Palette focused on it; its just always been a support ability. So without further ado here's the list.
The strategy is pretty obvious from face value; use your built-in synergies within your cards to bring your Shard Bank up to 30 while all your Freeze abilities prevent your opponent from doing the same or doing any significant damage to your shard total. Onto the thought process behind the individual cards.
Crackle - Not an overly popular Legendary for Freeze Palettes but I personally really like how it can completely stop your opponent's lesser cards on their Canvas from resolving whilst building up its own resolve. Whilst it does also affect your own cards I've got a little tech in here to try and help me run away with it on the turn he's Deployed still.
Fibron - It's a Freeze-focused build.... of course this absolute beast had to be in there; turning all the temporary Freeze abilities into straight up removal.
Harusk - A real titan of Freeze; a single card, which almost pays for itself without any other help, that then stops their resolves for a turn is huge.
Chromatic Voyager - Mainly here to be a bigger Character that can also serve as semi-decent Trade fodder when necessary; its resolve can climb quite quickly and often almost fully pays for itself the turn its Deployed.
Jewna Hare - It's a cheap drop that pays for itself and Freezes an opponent's Character, with the other synergies in here this card often gains more that it costs so its a no brainer.
Mist Mountain - Stat wise already a decent card with 2 Steal and 4 Shard Value but also reduces the cost of the vast majority of cards in the Palette meaning it can pay back dividends on future turns after its Deployed.
Snowdrift Sanctuary - Double Freezing Location with a high Shard Value so good Trade fodder at certain times.
Chroma Storehouse - With a lot of cyan cards being present in the Palette thought it was only natural to include this card; can easily catapult you close to, if not over, 30 shards.
Ice Falls - Similar to above although this is more of a gradual increase of its own resolve than one big amount of gain.
Blizzard Plains / Tarni Lake - Cheap locations that Freeze Locations or Characters respectively when Deployed.
The Valli Caves - Arguably one of the best commons in the game, let alone in Draco. Cheap to Deploy and a Freeze any turn.
Materno's Egg - Grabs Harusk as early as possible and allows you to potentially Deploy it on your opponent's turn.
Breath of Fire - A staple of Draco; double removal of almost any threatening card while also serving as decent Trade fodder in a pinch.
The Quake - Potential board wipe of your opponent's Characters if they've gone wide and you've managed to Freeze them all to provide a more permanent solution to them.
Thermal Submerge - Allows you to recycle a Character when necessary so they're not totally lost.
Chroma Overflow - Similar to Chroma Storehouse only note how this card tallies the number of that particular shard not just how many cards have it, so can give you a really powerful amount of gain when you have cards like Snowdrift Sanctuary and Ice Falls out.
Crucial Discovery - Gets you to Materno's Egg sooner then grabs another card on top of that. Although this adds quite a high cost to the combo it's worth it in most situations.
Ice Breaker - Can be useful if you end up versus any Freeze abilities yourself but, more often than not, it's in here so that Crackle doesn't completely stunt your Canvas so you can capitalise of the others cards' resolves once he's resolved first.
Other cards you could consider running include the following;
Hularla - A more controlled, single targeting and repeatable source of Freeze, whilst also being a powerful Character on your turns, that gives you a bit more flexibility in your options.
Slayscorch Pools - Every time you Freeze a card you gain shards; definitely a worthwhile card if you're not so concerned about what your opponent has on their Canvas.
Draco Planum Library - Allowing you a steady stream of extra cards, provided you can pay for them, so you can capitalise more on your opponents resolves not affecting you.
Ice Cannon - Object that serves a similar purpose to The Valli Caves; just unfortunate its quite weak but if you're confident you can field stronger Characters than your opponent it makes it more of a threat.
Holder of Truth - Think your opponent has an answer to your set-up in their Palette? Use this to grab it out and immediately throw it in their Dregs, whilst also being another decent Trade card too.
What sort of Palette ideas do you guys have when it comes to focusing on Freeze? Do you think it's worth making it your main focus or is it just a powerful aide to other strategies? Would love to hear your guys' thoughts!
