Card Highlight - Dexter Master of Dragons

Hello realmrunners and welcomd to another Card Highlight!

This time I thought I’d look at one that might seem a little obvious but there’s more to it than meets the eye, albeit not in the way you’d imagine - that is the limited edition charity card Dexter, Master of Dragons.

Already at face value it’s an incredible card, 2 cost to give every dragon you control Protection and gains you a shard for every card you control? Incredible value. The Protection can play to your favour in a couple of ways; the obvious way is your dragons can now only be Erased either through Poisonous damage or through your opponent forcing you to Erase them, such as through Sorrono, but it also means you can use your weaker Characters to take down stronger ones without losing them in combat.

Dexter, Master of Dragons will definitely be a huge target for your opponent when it hits the field, so it’s best to have some way to keep it around ready to be deployed on the same turn. Your best options are Materno, who creates a soft-lock where both are giving each other Protection, or the realm relic Jamshid Orb which can be found quicker by Crucial Discovery since it is an Object.

These hard to break set-ups that can easily win you games in only a couple of turns is the reason that Dexter Master of Dragons is a virtually staple legendary in dragon focused Palettes. But there’s something else that makes this card very special; it’s based on a real person.

Dexter Constantine-Tatchell was the son of Jack and Rachel Constantine, two of the minds behind starting up Realm Runner Studios and, by extension, Achroma as a game. When he was just 5 Dexter was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma which was found to be cancerous. After going through multiple emergency treatments including blood transfusions, biopsies and 6 months of chemotherapy there was hope that tumour had been killed off but it was deemed inoperable. In March 2022 scans showed it had become aggressive but chemotherapy proved ineffective against it this time round. Dexter continued to fight on until he sadly passed away on July 27th 2022 at 7 years old. Since then Jack and Dexter have set up Dexter’s Arc, a branch of the children’s charity Alice’s Arc, which aims to raise funds to help with research into treatments for rhabdomyosarcoma and stop future parents having to go through the same horrible loss.

As a final note I’d just like to say - Jack and Rachel, if you happen to read this, I hope you and your family find some peace over this weekend. I may have suffered with losing a family member to cancer but I can’t even begin to imagine the feeling of going through it with your own son. I promise I’ll make the time to let him see some action in my games… once I’m done getting all the Achrom wins in first of course, can’t let the side down!

If you’d like to read more about Dexter’s story, or make a direct donation to the charity, head to their website for Dexter’s Arc. Buying yourself a copy or two of the card Dexter Master of Dragons is another way you can support this and definitely something I’d suggest, especially for any dragon players out there, as he is arguably one of the strongest legendaries we have for any Chroma Palette that doesn’t quite know what legendary to run so grab yours here.

That's all from me for now guys!
