Keyword Highlight - Shield Wall

Welcome Realm Runners, to another Keyword Highlight article!

Well this is technically just an update of an older article, but it’s had quite a substantial update so I thought I’d re-release it, so without further ado here is the revision of  Shield Wall. Here’s the new definition.

So to highlight the main point to this one; it only applies when you are the one being attacked and it only increases the shard value of your Characters, not their strength. As an example; if you had Siv of Lacringi and Lacringi Miner out and your opponent attacked your Lacringi Miner with a Brynhild of Brisgavi; your Miner would gain a shard value of 2, due to the Shield Wall in effect, and therefore survive the combat, however he would still only inflict 2 damage as his strength remains the same so Brynhild of Brisgavi would survive.

If you are the player declaring the attacks then Shield Wall does not apply to your characters’ shard values so you would just conduct combat normally, it is purely a defensive support Keyword.

Shield Wall abilities apply to your entire canvas and are stackable; so if you have Chieftess Astrid of Lacringi, Lacringi Shield Maiden and Shield of Lacringi out at the same time you will have a total of Shield Wall 4 meaning your characters would gain 4 shard value whenever your opponent attacks them. Note though that this only applies to the Characters and not Objects; so their shard values will remain the same.

As you can see from all the examples above, this Keyword can be a powerful defensive tool that makes it a lot harder for your opponent to use combat as an effective form of removal. Couple this with other defensive keywords like Defend or Protection, both of which are present on Siv’s Shield, and you can set up a really strong defense against your Characters being Erased through combat and potentially forcing your opponent to use up more resources before they can get through even your weakest characters.

Little side note as well for those interested, in regards to Siv of Lacringi specifically, if you managed to get the highest Shield Wall count possible on the table at once you would be sitting on a canvas with; Chieftress Astrid of Lacringi; Siv of Lacringi; 2 Lacringi Shield Maidens; 2 Shield of Lacringi; Siv’s Shield; as well as having resolved 2 of the Action card Lacringi Shield Wall. This would net you a gain of 8 shards from Astrid and 12 from Siv for a total of 20 shards that’s only really counterable by high strength characters, Poisonous Characters or Actions to take out Astrid and/or Siv.

If you’re interested in this ability it is unique to the Lacringi faction from the Warriors of Wishwell set, currently available in Unlimited, First Edition and even in the First Edition Collector’s set on the Achroma store.
