Card Highlight - Bounce

Hello to you all and welcome to another Card Highlight!

This time I’ll be looking into a card from Spirata that has, at least for me, been on the cusp of being a staple with its fantastic versatility at dealing with threats; Bounce.

At face value this card may not appear all that great, only returning a card to the hand doesn’t exactly achieve a lot in the grand scheme of things. However there are a few situations where this can play heavily in your favour.

Firstly, when using this on a character, any objects attached to it are erased since the character they were attached to is no longer on the canvas; so if your opponent has stacked multiple items on a key character Bounce helps take back the advantage. This is especially useful if they loaded high strength objects like Cintimani Stone or Dr Hue’s Lab Coat on them and you l cant deal with it through combat.

Secondly, and probably most impressively, this card gets around Protection since it doesn’t erase the card. A particular advantage if the protection is being caused by another card like Jamshid Orb or Bothy as you can break the connection, allowing you to erase the character if it is replayed.

It can also hit cards that have a high cost, causing your opponents to have to invest more shards to keep up with you. On top of this Bounce can also remove some big prevent cards from the canvas which then allows you, if you’re playing Achrom, to hit their shard bank harder unexpectedly or even win a turn sooner. Guardians of Flutterby Falls is a prime example of both of these targets.
Finally, and probably the easiest thing to forget about it, it can be used on your own cards! A lot of cards in Spirata have strong actions, like Sorrono or Carmella Traitorius, attached to them and this enables you extra uses out of them without having to use up a powerful Dig ability like the previously mentioned Cintimani Stone, or you could re-use a Splat or Squish ability by replaying it.

You can see, at least in theory, why Bounce can be a very powerful card in the right situation. How you manage to get that power out of it will depend a fair amount on you, as a player, reading the biggest threat correctly; there are times that it’s better to leave a card alone and save it to answer a combo piece rather than just shotgun it on the first thing you can’t erase by other means. This is why I regard as not quite having staple status because a nisplay with it can be pretty detrimental to you as opposed to other cards that allow you to erase things instead. So next time you’re working on a Spirata palette, Chroma or Achrom, give it a try and see how it works for you!

You’ll find Bounce in Chroma Squadron palettes & their own Collector’s Edition on the Achroma Store!
