Keyword Highlight - Poisonous

Hello Realm Runners and welcome to another Keyword Highlight article!

Today I thought I’d look at one that, as we get more chapters, is going to become more and more prevalent so it’s always worth considering, especially when thinking competitively - Poisonous.

Essentially this Keyword means your character can erase anything it goes into combat against whether it has enough strength to or not. The only exception to this, since it ignores Protection, is if the opponent’s character takes no damage from yours which happens if its loaded up with enough objects to soak it all up however Poisonous still means every object it hits is erased.

With all this in mind you can see why it can sometimes be an incredibly powerful ability, especially if you open with it before you opponent has put any characters down as it’s an immediate threat that will limit what they can put down as you can just trade with any of their characters on your next turn before they can react. It’s also worth mentioning that, if a character with Poisonous attacks, all damage it inflicts is treated as Poisonous damage even if it has objects boosting its strength.

With the most recent release of The Last Snow Dragons of Altari, Poisonous is now present in every realm in both character and object form.

This means it can be worked into any type of strategy in any realm. Spider Silk is a particularly scary one as it can give any character Poisonous, rather than it only being on the character holding the object, whilst being a decent strength object in its own right.

With all this taken into account there’s 3 ways you can counter Poisonous characters without taking too hard of a hit from them; Firstly you can remove them via other abilities and actions so you never have to worry about combat with them in the first place, although this will mean less resources to deal with other threats if it’s a one-shot play like Fireball; Secondly you can load up a character with enough objects to soak up the damage and take out the opposing Poisonous character, this one of the better ways of answering them as it will generally be less costly to you and some strategies can recycle objects consistently; Finally you can sacrifice a less important character that can erase them, this could mean either going on the aggressive and attacking into it or playing something decently threatening that makes them hit you but holding back something bigger to follow up with.

Always try to keep Poisonous in mind when palette building; you’ll want to make sure you have one of these answers to it otherwise you are handing over a lot of control to your opponent if you are unable to deal with it! Likewise, it’s also something to consider trying to find space for when building custom palettes as a way of dealing with strong creatures, Protection, or even making your opponent waste powerful actions to deal with them!
