Keyword Highlight - Dispose

 Good day Realm Runners and hello to you all!

Welcome to the second instalment of my Keyword Highlight articles!

Today I thought I’d cover something that’s a little more complicated for newer players to card games in general and the only way you can currently play during your opponent’s turn and that is Dispose. As before, let’s start with the definition direct from the Achroma site;

For anyone familiar with other card games, like Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh!, this is the nearest thing Achroma has to the ‘Stack’ or ‘Chain’. Generally speaking, the game tries to avoid creating overly complicated situations with mechanics like those in other games, but having a one-shot response as an option to give you some ability to react to your opponent’s plays sooner is a good middle ground, even if it does come with restrictions attached.

So, to word it slightly differently, the moment your opponent deploys a card, activates an ability or attacks, you are able to respond with one Dispose ability in reaction to that. If the ability would deploy a new card, like Alchemist’s Tincture pictured below, it is not deployed until the original card, ability or attack has fully gone through. During your turn even they function like Actions so you can use them at any time.

As it stands currently, Dispose can do things like; Deploy a Cintimani Stone to then deploy another card which can then Gain/Drain/Steal you a win out of nowhere, Erase a card that’s key to your opponent’s combo and even, in conjunction with our good friend Phisto, gain you enough shards to win during your opponent’s turn since Dispose causes the original card to be Erased.

Now, currently, this keyword is exclusively given to Objects which means they automatically have the condition of requiring a character to be out to even be played. However who’s to say that, one day, they don’t find a way to put Dispose on a Character or Location somehow?

Possibly the current best combo utilising Dispose is Materno’s Egg into Harusk;

If Harusk is the only 3 Shard Value or lower Dragon in your palette then Materno’s Egg is guaranteed to Reveal it. During your opponent’s turn, because of the Dispose ability, you could then play Harusk for free when your opponent goes to play a card meaning you could stop their Resolve phase entirely! Of course if they just draw and pass through their turn you won’t have the opportunity, but then you’ll still have it for a later turn! This is just one example; there are many others that you’ll find within each realm.

In summary; Dispose adds a whole new layer of tactical play to the game and, there's currently 23 Objects across four realms we have right now that have the keyword on them so there’s already a wide variety of abilities that they can have. They range from making potentially game-ending plays, to finding a key card to your deck to be able to make those big plays sooner, to just blocking a good chunk Drain or Steal for the turn so that you can survive longer. It has the power to both speed a game up whilst also giving someone on the back foot a chance to fight back; isn’t that just the sort of thing you love to see in a game!

Currently, all the Objects with the Dispose keyword can be found in the Rise of the Realm Runners expansions for each realm which are available from the Achroma store website.

That's all from me for now guys!
