Card Highlight - Sprat Marail

Hello there Realm Runners, hope you’re all doing well!

Welcome to the second instalment of my Card Highlights series where I look at a card from the world of Achroma and highlight its possible uses and benefits in different scenarios.

This time, with it being Spirata season, I thought I’d take a look at a card from that realm that’s a bit of a dark horse in my mind that I’d love to see in more palettes; Sprat Marail.

At a glance it’s hard to imagine why this guy wouldn’t be a lot of people’s choice; a respectable 4 strength with a steal 2 and splat which makes him effectively only cost 1 on the turn he’s played (as long as you have another card on the canvas), however he’s up against stiff competition with fan favourites Copper Joss and Spiral also being in the same card pool as him! So let’s look at where Sprat stands out compared to those other legendaries and that’s his ability; During your End Step you may both Draw and Trade. The flexibility this legendary painter offers is fantastic - it can be a great asset for both Chroma or Achrom based palettes so let’s break down the benefits Sprat can bring based on those styles of play.

Chroma

It almost goes without saying the boost this brings when you’re looking to bring your shard bank up to 30; not only does he almost pay for himself on the turn he’s played but the steal 2 can help keep your opponent down to either prevent them playing cards or bring you an Achrom win unexpectedly. The addition of allowing you a draw and trade at your end step means you can gain even more shards without sacrificing any real card advantage to do it! As a side-note, you can put Sprat at the head of a palette focused around red shards as well and take advantage of Lava Fountain and Kaunan to give you cheaper costing cards and a potentially big burst of gain respectively.

Achrom

When it comes to good Achrom support Sprat has 3 main things going for him. A decent natural steal resolve; he can damage the opponent’s shard bank while maintaining yours so you can play even more cards. Giving you the ability to trade every turn without hurting your card draw;  whilst it’s often necessary to trade to keep your shards flowing in an Achrom deck this usually comes at the cost of you not drawing as much but Sprat removes this downside entirely unless you are forced to trade at the start of your turn. A strength of 4; this puts him in a good position to take out weaker characters and, with a bit of help from objects like Prismsprayer, Achrom Corrupter or even Dyrnwyn for location removal, he can be a real threat in combat which gives you a good control option to hinder your opponent’s board development and really put them in a rough spot.

Overall it’s safe to say that, where Copper Joss gives you fantastic gains and Spiral can give you an insane steal on resolve, Sprat Marail is more of a jack-of-all-trades type. He may not be the strongest legendary to come out of Spirata but his real strength lies in his flexibility which can, in turn, give you more options during each of your games.

Perhaps with future support from Spirata Chapter 2, or maybe a good amount of custom palette building, he might have his time in the spotlight yet!
