Keyword Highlight - Vengeance
Welcome, once again, realmrunners to another breakdown of one of the new Keywords that’s coming from The Monsters Norso. Today we’re hitting up the Achrom-aligned faction’s one; the very sinisterly named Vengeance. Here’s the definition:
Now here’s a real interesting Keyword so let’s break it down. Any way that the card can have shards drained, and survive, will cause the ability to trigger. So instantly attacking into an opponent’s Characters will trigger this, which I’d imagine is the going to be the most common method that it’ll be done. The fact it can then be triggered multiple times means, if you can somehow do multiple amounts of damage in small increments, you’ll get some fantastic value out of it. Further to this, it being able to trigger in your opponent’s turn basically means whacking into any Character you have, that has a Vengeance ability, with smaller ones will just trigger their abilities; meaning the only way to safely deal with them is in one big hit.
Although the cardpool of Characters that have the Vengeance Keyword is quite limited, the power level of them when triggered can be very high at the right time. To highlight a couple of the main ones for me; Astar, The Minotaur has the ability to wipe a lot of smaller cards off the Canvas; and Detestatio, The Chimera can temporarily Dig any Character from your dregs, meaning it allows you to re-use Action abilities and get free resolve effects tagged on to your turn.
Combat isn't the only way you can trigger them either. There are several cards in this set that are repeatable forms of Shard Drain that can hit your own Characters and some even hit your opponent's cards too. These include the other Legendary from the faction, The Abyss, as well as other cards like Athen from the Chroma faction, The Abandoned Axe, Cerberus and Hunting Grounds. There are other sources that deal damage outside of combat but these are mainly single use hits.
This is a Keyword that, despite its more limited number of options, I can see being a real thorn to your opponent if they don't have any straight up Erasure cards so I look forward to seeing how it mixes into Norso decks in the future!
