Custom Palette Showcase - Sacrificial Tactics
Hello realmrunners, well it’s been a fair amount of time hasn’t it! Hope you’ve been doing well since I last wrote!
With the upcoming event on the 21st of August dedicated to Dexter Master of Dragons I naturally started to look more into options of custom builds from Draco planum and realised something; one thing I’ve never seriously done is take a crack at a more Sacrifice focused build and, after some tinkering, I quickly remembered why. With the aim of the game being driven by your cards’ resolve effects, using them up as fodder for some of your abilities might seem counter-intuitive as you can’t win as quickly; but building and piloting this style of custom Palette requires you to play with a very different style - absolute control over the Canvas and grinding down your opponents’ best resources. Before we go into any more detail here’s my build below.
The overall strategy, as stated above, is to grind through your opponent’s resources and win by being the only player with any significant presence on the Canvas. Before the release of The Last Snow Dragons of Altari, I didn’t experiment with this style much before due to the lack of reliable interaction, but the introduction of support from Freeze has plugged several gaps that can repeatedly hamper your opponent’s plans if left unchecked.
The main things to note when playing this Palette are that you need to be very careful planning how you spend your shards to get the best value out of each move you make and, unless necessary, you’re best off utilising all of your Sacrifice abilities right at the end of your turn, allowing your cards to fully resolve and give you the best set up for your next turn. So let’s go over the individual cards themselves.
Vortigen - In here as a way to hopefully answer multiple threats whilst also being a high value card as a Trade fodder. Only real downside to him is the low resolve.
Fibron - With the amount of Freeze teched in, this turns it into straight up removal. Also a decent strength stat of 4 allows it to beat through many smaller Characters.
Jali / Caeruleum Draco - Little bit of hand control so you’re not always relying on removing your opponent’s cards from their Canvas
Impius Drake - One of the best uncommons from The Siege of Draco Temple; cheap to play and gets around Protection if necessary. Only time it isn’t as strong is versus someone with multiple cards out but, the way this Palette plays out, that should be less often.
Jewna Hare - One drop that pays for itself in the same turn. The added Freeze ability just adds to the value.
Snowdrift Sanctuary - Double Freeze every turn that’s also a potential Trade option in a pinch. The resolve also provides you with a steady source of shards over a few turns.
Wolfgang Woods - Character control tied into a Location, making it harder to remove so can potentially be used as Sacrifice fodder.
Draco Graveyard - Gives a bit of recursion incase the game grinds out, even if it is quite costly.
The Valli Caves - Cheap repeatable Freeze option thats harder to interact with, that also gains you shards.
Prism Stone - More than pays for itself on the turn its deployed, which is ideal for this Palette’s style.
Sacrificial Ovoo / Stolen Dragon Egg - Objects that benefit from being used as Sacrifice fodder.
Bathed in Achrom - Using your opponent’s cards rather than yours as costs for your Sacrifice effects? Count me in! The deploying one for free is just icing on top.
Ritualistic Notion / Sacrificial Ritual - Sacrifice effects that give you flexible removal.
Scorch - Sacrifice card that becomes extremely potent when used in conjunction with Sacrificial Ovoo and Stolen Dragon Egg.
Some other options you can use in this include;
Tenebris - Slightly higher costing than Vortigen and only Erases a single card but you get a real solid resolve as a payoff.
Ruber Draco / Monastery Nest - Cards that pay for themselves on the first turn so can be used to keep your shard bank healthy.
Gritfell Drake - Character that benefits from being Erased, such as by Sacrifice.
Ornithopter - A unique Object that can essentially operate as being Sacrifice fodder for two cards if needed, otherwise just very powerful with a decent resolve too.
What sort of ideas do you guys have when it comes to building around the Sacrifice mechanic? Come show off your version, or any other custom Palettes in the discord!
