Hello guys and welcome to another Keyword Highlight article!
With my recent article going over the intro set, Dexter's Dragon Riders, I thought I'd go into detail on the new keyword introduced in that set; Mount.
The definition given to us is as follows.
When it comes to combat, as the definition states, both characters are treated as a single card; this means if you have Moscow Mounted on Snark it attacks and defends as a single character with 4 strength and shard value. This would mean if they went against a 3 strength character then both of them would survive the combat.
In this respect, cards with Mount operate in a similar fashion to objects by increasing a character’s strength and shard value however they are harder to remove through combat alone.
Outside of this they are still treated as two separate cards with their own stats, resolves, etc; so if the opponent used something like Fireball to remove one of them then the other would still remain on your canvas.
When it comes to dealing with Poisonous characters it is important to remember that the pair are treated as a single character when it comes to combat; this means any damage inflicted from the Poisonous character will erase both of the pair so be careful if your opponent has something down to give Poisonous to anything as it can be a real hit to your resources if it connects! Of course, as always, this weakness can be mitigated by attaching objects to either of your Mounted characters to take the hit instead.
If you attach an object to a Mounted character you must be specific as to which character they are attached to, since they are treated as separate cards outside of combat. They also still follow the same rules that objects normally would for combat where it takes damage before the character and this applies regardless of who it is attached to since they are treated as a single character when attacking or defending.
On this topic, there were a couple of objects introduced in this set that can help you Find the missing piece of a Mount pairing with Dragon Rider Saddle and Young Draco Scale which can also help make the initial character harder to remove if you can’t deploy the other part in the same turn.
At the time of writing, there are a few cards that directly benefit you utilising a Mount strategy as your palette’s focus; Fromp allows you to gain you back shards based on your Dragons & Dragonriders, whilst Unbreakable Bond does so based on how many Mounted pairs you have; there’s also Offensive Swoop that allows you to drain shards from your opponent’s cards which gives you the ability to weaken their characters so your weaker ones can take them out in combat or erase some of them entirely; note that if you control multiple.
Whilst Dexter’s Dragon Riders gave us a mini-faction on each side of the wider Chroma-Achrom conflict, from the support contained in all the Draco cards so far, if you wanted to focus on Mount as your main strategy; dragons generally have the stronger support due to the presence of many cards from all of the current sets which provide fantastic support for the type.
That's all from me for now guys!
