Keyword Highlight - Sacrifice

 Hello Realm Runners and welcome!

This week on my Keyword Highlight series I thought I’d take a deeper look at a lesser used one from Chapter 1 of Draco, Sacrifice. So let’s get right into it.

Seems simple enough right? Although you’ll probably be asking yourself…. but why would that be a thing? What isn’t obvious from the website’s definition is that this is effectively added as a further cost to certain cards, currently all actions, to use the ability of them. Some examples, found in the Stone Waste Drakes palette, can be found below.

These abilities can be very powerful, albeit some are better used in games of 3 or more players as they become stronger the more opponents you have. Tactically speaking, since all Sacrifice cards are currently actions, the way to get the most value out of them is to wait until after your Resolve step to deploy them; this means all your cards get to use their effects before being erased. Despite this powerful potential in the right situations, there’s no ignoring the fact that they effectively require an extra card to be played which can be a hindrance unless you build it with the right cards to support it. In the Mutans expansion you’ll find some more actions as well as several cards which will increase the potency of your Sacrifice cards, most being objects.

Bathed in Achrom - allows you to turn an extra cost for you intro extra removal as well as giving you an extra free play of any Sacrifice card. Virtually a staple if you’re focusing on the Keyword.

Dark Toli - totally removes the cost of sacrifice for you which can pay dividends if you plan on deploying multiple in a turn.

Sacrificial Ovoo & Stolen Dragon Egg - objects that give you benefits by being sacrificed themselves, if you can keep recovering them then these can help you get fantastic control.

The final piece to support a Sacrifice palette comes from the most recent set release, The Last Snow Dragons of Altari, and that is Gritfell Drake who gives you a good character to sacrifice that also helps with your draw power.

As you can see from most of the support and where it comes from, Sacrifice is mainly geared towards an Achrom victory. However, since the Keyword is mainly focused on actions with a fair amount of steal effects woven into it as well, with the inclusion of the fan favourite Realm Runner Phisto, as well as a couple of decent gain resolve cards, there is potential to make it closer to a hybrid strategy as he will allow you to regain the shards you spent to play the cards you’re then sacrificing, resulting in you keeping a healthy shard bank going, and also draw you more cards to replace them.

As a strategy Sacrifice is a difficult one to grasp the full potential of; it requires a whole new level of resource management as well as spot on threat analysis as it’s usually more costly to you to deal with your opponent’s cards. On top of this building the palette list itself is a key factor due to having to balance ratios of Sacrifice cards to pay-off cards like those objects above as well as making sure you include some overall solid cards on top of all of that.

That's all from me for now guys!
